Some people say that the only reason for learning a foreign language is in order to travel or to work in a foreign country. Other say that this is not the reason why someone should learn a foreign language. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

In this day and age, learning a second language is considered a useful and essential tool for people of all ages. While many pursue a foreign language so as to travel or work overseas, there are still some opponents who believe this is not the reason for learning a new language. From my perspective, a new language should be digested with a demand to discover the world and broaden people’s horizons .

On the one hand, a second language, to many learners, is considered as a way which helps them to travel and find a job in another country. In fact, in this knowledge – based society, each employee is required a lot of relevant knowledge and skill sets to win a job vacancy and fluency in a foreign language can place at the top of the list. Applicants, especially graduates, are more likely to win in the competitions and have more employment opportunities with qualifications in foreign languages. Additionally, those travellers who have demand to explore new countries can easily pass the interviews and get passports to travel overseas. Utilizing a second language fluently also assists travelers in communicating, bargaining as well as helps them to avoid cultural shock. Therefore, many language learners pursue their second languages as a means to travel and work overseas.

On the other hand, the purpose of learning a new language of some people derives from the need to explore the world and enlarge their horizons. In fact, language is a means to have access to the culture and custom of a country. When it comes to learning a different language, people, therefore, can stand a chance to delve more into the life from another nations and how the residents enjoy their life in another parts of the world. Also, to many people who are passionate about languages, they learn a second language in order to broaden their knowledge through reading foreign books and make friend with foreigners. A recent study among students from a university in Ho Chi Minh city indicates that those students who are able to read ecademic books in English tend to understand more clearly and deeply the knowledge rather than those read those books translated into Vietnamese.

In conclusion, the purpose of learning a second language can vary. Regardless of purposes it results from and outcomes it brings, I still contend language learners should start with a desire to enhance their horizons and discover the world.

Finally , I can share it with you. I’m absolutely elated ,..buzzing mate 😉

Reading : 8.5 Speaking :8.5 Writing : argh 7 Listening : 8 ( hated the maps) Overall : 8 .

Thank God ! I’m not complaining . ,

TRUST ME ! I understand the pain ,struggle ,helplessness and sulkiness .The desperation towards this totally nonmedico exam .

but don’t lose FAITH .

Let me tell you few things that nobody told me and nobody will tell you ..

Being a British citizen , I took IELTS like a piece of cake .. My first attempt was a huge eye opener when I failed to achieve the required score .. I needed a minimum of 7 in each module ..and overall 7.5 . My second attempt went well . But again I failed to get the required score .. I was disappointed 🙁

Starting from the scratch . Yes ! No matter on what Level you are , start with the basic grammar ( I loved Simon IELTS and IELTS buddy grammar section ) . Go through the several sentences and their types .

Focus more on task 2 !! The worst mistake I did was spending so much time on task 1 .. TASK 2 carries twice as many marks . So , focus on it .

PROOFREAD :

P : punctuation

R: reread for spelling errors

O: overall link with the topic

O: overwriting

F: fragmented sentences

R : reread every sentence

E : extra information

A : articles

D : do I make sense ?

I : increase vocabulary

N : noun

G: grammar

The worst mistake , I used to incorporate too many ideas in one paragraph . I kept thinking it’s the test of my intelligence .

Ouch .. Not really .. You just have to expand the idea .. Stick to one concept per idea and expand it . Yes literally .. exaggerate .

Intro , Paraphrase , Personal opinion .

1st paragraph ; Topic sentence . Example . Explanation .

2nd Paragraph ; Topic sentence, Example , Explanation. Lastly , conclusion .

Make examples up !! Please go through the columns and studies and just make any examples up .. for example, My task 2 was about the companies and employees / customers !! Make surveys up ., That there was blah blah increased shown or according to UNICEF , there will be 33 percent increase in obesity by 2020 or blah blah .. Google some reports and studies , you’ll know what I am on about .

Be coherent . Big question ; how ?? Read the first sentence and keep asking yourself am I linking it up with the previous one .. Make sure you keep repeating it .. don’t write until you are 100 percent sure .

Stay on topic . Keep reading the question and ask yourself ? Am I being irrelevant ?

Rough plan about what to write . List of a similar/ related vocabulary . I even wrote the linking words and whatever fancy words I could remember or use.

 

TIME MANAGEMENT IS EQUALLY IMPORTANT.

I always say this , you have to be fake !! I.e ; make sure you have at least one sentence starting with *ing* , one respectively sentence , one with the relative clause , dependent or independent . Few simple sentences , and few complex ones . Few sentences starting with *if*.

Last but not the least , get yourself a study partner . Discuss it with THEM 🙂 go through the notes together .

SPEAKING: be confident , make things up .. watch seasons , movies or whatever you want . Familiarize yourself with how a native would speak n answer . Please don’t memorize the answers . They won’t judge you .. Give your opinion .

Reading ; I love reading novels so I just followed the general advice on reading lessons ( esp Liz’s video on reading ) . Learn to cram .. Make a circle around the important dates , figures , names . Relax . Usually the first and last line technique work for some people but I always ended up reading it all .. practice reading / newspapers / magazines .

Listening : practice . I abhor maps and unfortunately I got one this time :@ I listen to the narrator and try to write down the points whilst listening , It is a bit tricky but it does help . It helps you recall the whole thing .. I know it’s not that easy .. Helped me, though .

GOOGLE SOME ONLINE LESSONS AND START PRACTICING.

READING:

All you need is

  1. Stop watch
  2. Cambridge books
  3. A blank piece of paper with numbers 1-40 marked on it. Just like real exam answer sheet.

How to Practice:

Set the watch to exct 60 minutes, and have the Reading Test(Academic) from Cambridge book ready. Start time and pretend you are under examination condition, so much so that when the alarm sounds you stop right there. Now mark your paper and you will know where you stand. This practice will help you manage time during real exam and give you the confidence to attempt Reading section just as you would at home.

How to Approach the Passages:

  1. Always start with passage 1, as it is usually the easiest and gives you the confidence that you are on track.
  2. Always write your answers on the answer sheet. It saves time and gives you those extra minutes you might need for the tougher passages.
  3. Write your answers in UPPER CASE letters. Saves you the hassle of Capital and Small letters. For instance, Instead of Agricultural Insdustry, write AGRICULTURAL INDUSTRY.
  4. Quickly go through questions of the respective passage first. For MCQs, only read main question and not the options. Read all the True/False questions and where you have to fill in the blanks, just quickly read the paragraph to get an idea so that you can spot that paragraph in the passage. Do not read the ‘list of headings’ for different paragraphs in the passage.
  5. After reading the questions, start the passage. Make sure you keep going back to questions to get an idea what you are looking for in the passage.
  6. It is usually hard to find the right heading for different paragraphs. The trick is to read each paragraph and at the end of it go through the list of headings, and choose the one which best fits.
  7. When you’d only read the question and not the options in MCQs, you simply have to find the answer and look for it in the options.
  8. If you are stuck somewhere, move to next question.
  9. Learn how to scan and skim for the answers.

These tips will help you save time. You can easly score Band 8 or higher following these simple tips. Finally, Practice, practice and practice. You will only know what is your weakness, if you practice under exam conditions.

WRITING:

There is only one source I can recommend and that is Ielts Simon. Brilliant Blog. He has explained everything so well. My tips are:

  1. Don’t show off. If you think fancy words can help you get high score then you are wrong. Keep it simple and to the point.
  2. Focus on the four criteria your writing score depends on. This information is available on British council site. I will upload that in the files section as well(for my lazy friends
  3. Recent xam questions are posted on Ieltsnetwork. Try to write essay on these. Get someone to check your essays if that’s possible, otherwise compare yours with Simon’s essay and see what you can improve in your essay. Practice writing 250 words essay, as writing less would cause you to lose score.
  4. Make your essays coherent and keep your introduction and conclusion as simple as possible.
  5. Google how to compose/write different sentences. This helps you with writing different ypes of sentences, which makes your essay look more academic. Also, learn where and when to use punctuation etc. Very helpful if you are aiming for higher band.
  6. Again, go through every post of SIMON in both WT1 and WT2 sections.

Hello to everyone who is reading this guide. It’s a little endeavor to help future aspirants to go through PLAB.

A little background about me.. I graduated in 2013 finished my internship in 2014 took ielts right after finishing my internship and by the grace of Almighty, got the required band in one go. Then, took PLab1 in March 2015 and declared successful in first attempt. I didnot take any tutions or courses and I am willing to Help others.

For Ielts:

The most Frequent question I receive is how long does it take to preapre for ielts. The answer is, it depends on the person.. If you have a background in English I am pretty sure you will get the required band in 1-1.5 month’s preparation. If you have difficulty understanding English you might need 6 months. I trained a couple of friends for ielts so it’s only my opinion, which might be wrong, but it will give you a general idea. I took ielts with 1 month of very casual preparation and got the required band.

To assess yourself try a couple of practice tests (from Cambridge books) and see where you stand.

Tips for Listening: For beginners try to watch cartoons and actively listen to what is being said.. Watch English movies with subtitles and try to understand what dialogues are being delivered. Pause and rewind if you want to. Watch BBC and other News channels often. If you skip some words, don’t feel bad about yourself its part of the learning process. Overtime you will feel that your listening has improved and you will be able to understand 90% of what is being said. For people who have good listening skills Just solve the Cambridge ielts series and Barron’s ielts Do all the tests and when you are done with them try to take some free listening tests which are available on the internet..(google them). Practice different accents too, as in my test, one section was in Aussie accent which I found a bit difficult.

NOTE: When writing answers, always use correct spellings. Incorrect spellings deduct marks

Tips for Reading: For beginners Start with Novels as fiction is easy to digest and is interesting to read. Underline new words and phrases. Try to learn the sentence structure. Use a dictionary and thesaurus often to learn some antonyms and synonyms. Once you are comfortable, start reading articles and Newspapers and follow the same guidelines (underline new words etc.) For People who are good at reading Just solve the Cambridge series 1-9 and you will get the target band.

NOTE use correct spellings. Some teachers say to read the questions first and look at the passages and recommend skim reading. I found it very unhelpful and a waste of time. I used to read the passage first quickly, underline the dates and names (that saves time when u start solivnig questions) then Look at the questions and skim through the passage. Remember Time management is very important. For passage 1 allocate 16 minutes, 18minutes for passage 2 and 20 minutes passage 3. Practice using a stop watch.

Tips For Writing: It is the most difficult part as most people say. I have seen some good writers score 6.5 or 6.0 If that happens don’t be disappointed take it again Inshallah you will reach there. Practice is the key for writing at least write 1 essay a day. For beginners have a look at sample essays (given in the Cambridge books and/or internet) try writing them with some paraphrasing. Never cram the essay word to word. Trust me they will know that and mark you accordingly. Once you are habitual of writing try to use some advanced words in your sentences which you have learnt through your reading practice. Don’t try to impress the reader with some ‘heavy’ words which you don’t know how to use. Instead keep it simple and elegant. Avoid punctuation mistakes. Focus on Paragraphing

For Task1: Do not give your conclusion in the end. Only reproduce the information that is provided. Try to use a rich vocabulary instead of borrowing words from the Question. Always paraphrase the atatement provided to you. Keep it short and simple and don’t write too much.. Ideally, it should be 150-170 words

For Task2: Focus on your opening and conclusion as these are the two things that create an impression on the reader. Practice some common writing topics (use Google) and make your own essay and finalize it. Show your essays to a friend/teacher who has scored high in ielts. Use some idioms in the essay (but use them correctly). Ideally your essay should be of 4 to 5 paragraphs with 1 opening and 1 closing paragraphs. Always write a minimum of 250 words. You will lose marks if you are short of words no matter how beautifully you have written. Ideally, 250-275 Words would suffice. Avoid long paragraphs. Stay on topic and Try to cover what is being asked in the question. For instance Cover both views, Pros and cons, etc. Do not agree or disagree in the same essay. Give reasons if you agree with something in 2 3 paragraphs. NOTE: always proofread your essay and report. Even native English speakers make mistakes. Proof reading will easily avoid you save you some marks.

Tips For Speaking: For Beginners and good speakers: Speaking Can only be improved if you speak! Find a partner online. Practice speaking with him/her. Speak infront of a mirror. Dont overthink while you speak. Remember! its Okay to make mistakes. Just speak whatever comes in your mind. If you make a mistake in the real exam and realise it, Relax, Say ” I am sorry” and speak the correct sentence. Avoid repetitive words. For instance, instead of using I think over and over, substitute with in my opinion, I believe etc. DONOT answer with only a YES or NO. Try to elaborate your answer. Maintain a good eye contact. Speak clearly. Pronunciation does not matter a lot so speak naturally. For task 2 cover everything that is being asked. You will lose marks if you don’t. As mostly there are doctors in this group so speaking won’t be a problem for most of them.. I found speaking challenging because of my stammering but I am glad I got over it.

Books recommended: Cambridge ielts series 1-9..

For Plab

Time required to prepare for plab is 3-3.5 months at maximum. If you were a good student during your finals (unlike me :-)) and have done your internship correctly trust me you can pass PLAB1 with just a month preparation.

The material you need is all in this group. Start gathering and organising the mocks. It took me about 2 weeks just to organize the material.

Previously people have said that oxford is a must read to pass PLAB so I followed them.. I read oxford cover to cover. It definitely helped me to achieve a high score but, scores don’t matter in PLAB so relax. You will be fine fine even without it. There were certain questions even oxford couldn’t answer so my advice to future plabbers is DONT study too much from oxford.. Use it strictly for reference purposes. I will mention the topics that can be done from OHCM and OHCS in the end.

The most important thing are MOCKS. Try to do as many and as often you can. You will be seeing most past plabbers emphasizing on doing MOCKS and they are 100% right. “Doing mocks” mean that you try to answer the question and understand the logic instead of blindly following the keys. Even if you do not find the answer of a particular question, by the time you have finished your hunt for the right answer, your entire topic would have been covered. I would recommend pass medicine for people who want to broaden the knowledge for other exams along PLAB but definitely not for PLAB. The exam has a similar pattern of MOCKS so your primary focus should be doing them.

Material Nedded to pass: 1700 questions qbank. Swammy mocks 2015, Samson mocks and Samson notes. (They all are available in this Group) Or you can PM me. Time needed to pass: 40 days

Material Needed to Ace: Above plus OHCM and OHCS (important topics only) Oxford assess and progress. Make notes of the additional points from Oxford books on samson notes. Find your refrences from www.patient.co.uk and read the professional articles instead of reading the general leaflets and guidelines from the mentioned website. www.nice.org.uk can also be used for the same purpose. Never ever use Ncbi.nlm or other websites because they have researches and studies published on them and they will confuse you even more. Time needed to ace: 3 months

Take part in the discussions even if you don’t know the answer but if a fellow doctor comes with a reference and better explanation always thank him. Don’t try to prove your point like a stubborn if you are not sure ( I hated that thing Btw :-p) I took part in most discussions tried to explain as much as I could and learnt a lot. Remember no matter how brilliant you are, there is always a better doctor in this group. Try to make friends because I prefer that study environment more but you can tailor that according to your preference (some people keep it strictly professional)

This is a detailed guide in which I tried to cover all the important points. I will keep adding things into it if I recall any. Honestly speaking, I was no genius but an average student still I Passed with a decent score. It is an easy exam trust me you can do it (although i was worried before the results:-p)

What Is the IELTS Exam?
